The best wedding venues in the Cape Winelands: 30 estates compared by town, size and price

Updated 3 November 2026

An editor's shortlist of the Winelands' best wedding venues in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington, Somerset West and Tulbagh, with capacities, published prices, accommodation and who each suits.

The Cape Winelands has more than a hundred venues that host weddings, from 300-year-old Cape Dutch manor houses to glass pavilions in the vines. Most 'best venues' lists online are a decade old or are written by a venue about itself. This one is built from each estate's own published capacities, rate cards and packages for 2026/27, cross-checked against planners' and photographers' accounts of how the venues actually run on the day. It is organised by town because the town decides your budget, your guests' logistics and the feel of the weekend before you have looked at a single lawn.

For each venue we give the guest range, where it sits on price, whether guests can sleep on site, and the kind of couple it suits. Where an estate publishes a rate it is quoted; where it does not, we say so rather than guess. All of them are listed on this site, so you can send one enquiry and compare the quotes.

How we chose

  • Setting that does the work for you: vineyards, mountains, oaks or a historic werf that need little décor.
  • A proper wet-weather plan, because the Winelands gets rain from April to October and a summer south-easter can empty a lawn.
  • Published, honest capacities, including the smaller number that applies once you add a dance floor.
  • Catering quality, whether in-house or through approved caterers, and clear rules on wine and the bar.
  • Logistics for guests: distance from Cape Town, accommodation on or near the estate, and sensible curfews.

Stellenbosch: the widest choice

Stellenbosch has the deepest bench of venues in the Winelands and the easiest airport run, about 35 to 45 minutes from Cape Town International. Prices span the whole market. See every estate on our Stellenbosch wedding venues page.

Lanzerac Wine Estate, Jonkershoek

The grand old name. A 1692 manor house, a five-star hotel and three wedding spaces: the Cellar Hall for up to 140 with a dance floor (R60 000 in 2026, including tables, linen, crockery, bar set-up and waiters), a Bedouin tent on the Manor lawns (R95 000) or a full marquee for up to 250 (R105 000), with a Private Dining Room at R28 000 for 15 to 30 guests. Larger weddings must book rooms, which suits couples with overseas guests who want everyone in one place. Best for: classic, formal weddings with hotel-level service.

Hazendal, Bottelary Road

A Russian-owned restoration of a 1699 estate, with a pavilion that floats on a pond for ceremonies of up to 100, a heritage kraal for outdoor receptions, the Avant-Garde restaurant for 80 and a Grand Hall for 250 (180 with a dance floor). Packages are on request; a published starting point in high season is around R45 000 before food. The estate is cashless, which guests need to know. Best for: couples who want modern art and gardens with a historic backdrop, twenty minutes from Cape Town.

MolenVliet, Banhoek Valley

An exclusive-use estate on the Helshoogte side with a chequered-floor reception hall, chandeliers, a deck over the vineyards and ceremony spots in the garden, by the river or in the vines. Up to 250 guests, with the cellar for winter ceremonies of up to 150. No restaurant on site, so catering comes from an approved list, and pricing is at the top of the Stellenbosch market. Best for: big, polished weddings with a planner.

Zorgvliet, Banhoek Valley

A 1732 chapel in the vines seats 120 to 140, and the Oak Room takes 120 to 200. Accommodation on the estate sleeps 34, and the two packages, one a blank canvas and one fully styled, make it easy to compare like with like. Best for: couples who want a real chapel without leaving the estate.

Webersburg, Stellenbosch Kloof

A restored 1796 werf with a manor house, a barn-style venue and suites on site, with in-house catering and an all-inclusive option. Mid to upper Stellenbosch pricing. Best for: a relaxed estate weekend where the wedding party sleeps in the historic buildings.

Hawksmoor House, Klapmuts

An exclusive-use guest house on the Matjieskuil farm with wrap-around views, up to 150 guests and, unusually for a wine estate, permission to bring your own wine. Best for: couples who want the whole house for the weekend and control over the bar.

Eikenhof Estate, Bottelary

The value pick in Stellenbosch: a fireplace reception room with chandeliers for up to 120, a vine-covered pergola for the ceremony, two guest villas, backup power and a published venue fee of R20 000 midweek to R26 000 on a weekend. Food and drinks are extra. Best for: couples with a strong caterer and a budget under R250 000 who still want vineyard views.

Fifteen minutes beyond Paarl, Wellington is where the large all-inclusive venues are. Bakenhof is a weddings-only estate with a glass chapel and all-inclusive packages of R2 800 to R6 000 a head for 100 guests and up, or in-house catering at R580 to R800 a head. Somerset West and the Helderberg

Twenty-five minutes from the airport and close to the beaches at Strand and Gordon's Bay, the Helderberg has three of the most-photographed estates in the Cape. Vergelegen is a 1700 estate with camphor trees older than the country and a published intimate package. Cavalli is a glass-and-steel restaurant venue that seats 350, or 300 with a dance floor, from about R60 000 in high season. Laurent at Lourensford publishes venue hire of R40 000 to R79 000 for 80 to 200 guests. Winery Road Forest has a forest chapel and winter rates, and Idiom sits high on the Sir Lowry's Pass side with views to False Bay. Full list on the Somerset West wedding venues page.

Tulbagh: country estates in the valley

Ninety minutes from Cape Town through the Nuwekloof Pass, Tulbagh is a ring of mountains around a valley of historic farms, and the most affordable of the six towns. Montpellier de Tulbagh has a hillside chapel with exposed beams, 300-year-old Cape Dutch buildings and beds for about 70. De Stilte takes up to 80, allows your own caterer and your own wine. Waverley Hills has a chapel, in-house or outside catering, your own wine and a late curfew, which is rare. Olive Rock takes up to 200 with accommodation. See the Tulbagh wedding venues page.

How to compare the venues on your shortlist

  1. Ask every venue for the same five numbers for your date: venue fee, per-head menu, staff line, bar policy and overtime rate. Headline fees are not comparable; totals are.
  2. Check the capacity that applies once the dance floor goes in. It is often 20 to 30 percent lower than the number on the website.
  3. Visit in the season you will marry. A lawn that is perfect in March can be a wind tunnel in December or a bog in July.
  4. Walk the wet-weather plan. If it is 'the marquee', ask who pays for it.
  5. Ask what the estate requires: a planner, room bookings, approved suppliers, a minimum spend. Each one is a cost.
  6. Read our 12 questions to ask a wine estate wedding venue before the site visit, and the wine estate wedding rules guide before you sign.

For the full cost picture, including worked budgets at each of these venues, see how much a Winelands wedding costs in 2026/27.

Questions couples ask

Which Winelands town has the best wedding venues?

Stellenbosch has the most choice and the easiest airport access, Franschhoek has the most sought-after destination estates at the highest prices, and Paarl, Wellington and Tulbagh offer comparable estates for R15 000 to R40 000 less. Somerset West is the closest to the airport and the sea.

What is the most expensive wedding venue in the Winelands?

Among published rates, Boschendal's Retreat at R350 000 to R630 000 and Maison's three-night packages at R371 000 to R610 000 are the highest, both including accommodation for the whole party. Several exclusive-use estates in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek quote privately at similar levels.

Which Winelands venues have a chapel?

Zorgvliet's 1732 chapel in Stellenbosch, Grande Roche's 300-year-old chapel in Paarl, Montpellier's hillside chapel in Tulbagh, Nooitgedacht's 170-seat chapel, Kleinevalleij's white chapel in Wellington, Belair's ivy-covered chapel, Bakenhof's glass chapel and the forest chapel at Winery Road Forest are the best known.

Which Winelands venues let you bring your own wine?

Very few wine estates do. Hawksmoor House, Damarakloof, Diemersfontein, De Stilte, Waverley Hills, Skilpadvlei and Graceland are among the exceptions. Most estates require their own wines at list price and manage the bar themselves.

How far are the Winelands venues from Cape Town airport?

Somerset West is about 25 minutes, Stellenbosch 35 to 45, Paarl 45 to 60, Franschhoek about an hour, Wellington about 70 minutes and Tulbagh about 90 minutes. Our guest travel guide covers shuttles and where guests should stay.

How far ahead do the best Winelands venues book up?

Peak-season Saturdays at the best-known estates are taken 12 to 18 months ahead, and some couples book two years out for December dates. Weekday and winter dates are often available within six months.

Do the best venues require a wedding planner?

Several do. Boschendal, Maison and The Venue Paarl all require a planner or on-the-day coordinator at your cost, and most exclusive-use estates expect one. Budget R5 000 to R10 000 for on-the-day coordination and R15 000 to R50 000 or more for full planning.
