Photography is one of the few wedding costs with a reliable national benchmark. Bridebook's 2025 South African survey puts photography alone at R10 000 to R25 000 and combined photo and video at R15 000 to R40 000, with a warning that some studios quote excluding VAT. None of the photographers we list publishes a starting price on their own site, so use the table as the frame for the quotes you receive.

Who shoots where

The Winelands is small enough that location barely matters. Flying Swan Media, Summerheart, Zandri du Preez, IdoLife and Boland Weddings are based in or listed for Stellenbosch, Etienne Botha in Franschhoek, and Jacob East and C & J Creative in Cape Town, and every one of them lists Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington, Somerset West and Tulbagh among the areas they serve. Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek are within about 40 minutes of each other, so travel is rarely an issue; the one place to ask about a travel fee is Tulbagh, which is 90 minutes from Cape Town.

Photographers by style

Documentary photographers follow the day as it happens and keep the posed work short. Summerheart (natural light, documentary) and Zandri du Preez (two photographers on every wedding, documentary) sit squarely here, and both have been published or shoot a limited number of weddings a year. IdoLife takes an editorial approach instead, with vibrant colour edits and warm black-and-white, mixing candid frames with styled portraits. If you are unsure which you want, look at a full gallery from one wedding rather than a highlights page; the difference shows in the two hundred ordinary frames, not the ten best.

Photo and film from one team

Five of the eight suppliers here shoot both stills and video, which is the cheaper way to get a film and avoids two crews negotiating for the same angle at the ceremony. Flying Swan Media is a Stellenbosch husband-and-wife team with more than 350 weddings since 2018 and elopement packages; Etienne Botha offers highlight reels and full-length films; C & J Creative is another husband-and-wife pair with customisable packages; Boland Weddings positions itself as the affordable, low-key option; and Jacob East makes cinematic, music-led films with photography available alongside. Our wedding videographers page lists the film-only studios too.

Elopements and small weddings

Flying Swan Media and Summerheart both name elopement and micro-wedding coverage, and Etienne Botha covers everything from elopements up. For a ceremony of two to thirty guests you usually need a few hours rather than a full day, and the price should reflect that; ask for a short-coverage quote rather than the standard package. Our guide to elopements and small weddings in the Winelands covers the venues and the legal side.

What to ask before you book

  • Is the quote inclusive of VAT? Bridebook notes that some South African studios quote without it.
  • How many hours are covered, and what is the overtime rate? Winelands receptions commonly run to a 23:00 or midnight curfew.
  • Is there a second photographer, and is it the same person every time? Zandri du Preez includes two as standard.
  • Is travel included for your venue? Ask specifically for Tulbagh, Wellington and anywhere up a mountain pass.
  • How many edited images are delivered, in what form, and how long does the gallery take?
  • Do they know your venue? A photographer who has shot the estate before knows where the light goes at six in the evening.

Light and timing in the Winelands

Summer sunsets in the Cape are late, so a five o'clock ceremony leaves time for portraits in low light and then a reception entrance before dark. In winter the sun sets much earlier, which is why winter couples bring ceremonies forward to early afternoon. Harvest, from February to March, means working vineyards and tractors in the background on weekday shoots. Our guide to the best time of year to marry in the Winelands has sunset times and weather by month.

Booking lead times

Good photographers are booked as soon as couples confirm a venue, and the venues themselves go 12 to 18 months ahead for peak Saturdays, so budget on 9 to 12 months' notice for a photographer on a Saturday between October and April. Zandri du Preez and others cap their annual bookings. Weekday and winter weddings are far easier. Send an enquiry from any listing with your date, venue and guest count and the photographer replies to you directly.

Questions couples ask

How much does a wedding photographer cost in the Winelands?

Bridebook's 2025 South African survey puts photography on its own at R10 000 to R25 000 and combined photo and video at R15 000 to R40 000. None of the photographers we list publishes a price on their own site, so ask for a quote and check whether it includes VAT.

Do photographers charge travel to Winelands venues?

Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek and Somerset West are usually covered without a fee by photographers based in Cape Town or the Winelands, since they are within about 40 minutes of each other. Tulbagh and some Wellington farms can attract a travel charge, so ask for it in writing when you request a quote.

Are prices quoted including VAT?

Not always. Bridebook's 2025 cost article specifically warns that some South African studios quote excluding VAT, which makes the bill noticeably higher than the headline figure. Ask for an inclusive figure before you compare two quotes.

How many hours of coverage do we need for an estate wedding?

A full estate wedding with getting ready, a late-afternoon ceremony and a reception that runs to the 23:00 or midnight curfew usually needs full-day coverage from getting ready to the last dance. An elopement or a ceremony with a dinner needs only a few hours. Ask what the overtime rate is in case the speeches run long.

Do Winelands photographers offer elopement packages?

Yes. Flying Swan Media and Summerheart both name elopement and micro-wedding packages, and Etienne Botha covers elopements as well as large weddings. Ask for short-coverage pricing rather than the standard full-day package.

Can one team do photography and video?

Five of the eight suppliers listed here do: Flying Swan Media, Etienne Botha, C & J Creative, Boland Weddings and Jacob East Films. Bridebook's 2025 range for a combined package is R15 000 to R40 000, which is usually less than booking two separate studios.

When will we receive our photos?

It varies by studio and season; IdoLife advertises quick gallery delivery, and others take longer in the busy months after a summer wedding. Ask for the delivery time in the contract, and whether a short preview set comes sooner.
