Elopement and small weddings in the Winelands: 2 to 30 guests

Updated 2 November 2026

What an elopement package includes, what two people or twenty guests actually pay, venues that welcome small numbers, the legal steps and a three-day itinerary.

Two people can get legally married in the Winelands with a private marriage officer, a photographer and a lunch on a wine estate for a fraction of what a full wedding costs, and the whole thing can be arranged within a few weeks of arriving if your documents are in order. A UK-facing guide priced an elopement for two with five nights' accommodation at R15 000 to R70 000 at 2020 rates, and a 20-guest celebration at about R750 per person for dinner and drinks on top of a venue fee that started around R60 000 for a dedicated space.

This guide covers what a package includes, what it costs at different guest counts, which estates welcome small numbers, the legal part in brief, and how to turn the wedding into a three-day stay.

What an elopement package includes here

Winelands elopement packages are usually built by one of three people: the venue, a planner or a photographer. A venue package typically includes a ceremony spot such as a garden, chapel or cellar, a short reception or a private table at the estate restaurant, and sometimes a night's accommodation. A planner-led package adds the marriage officer, flowers, hair and makeup and the photographer. A photographer-led package is the simplest: a few hours of coverage, help with the officer and a location, and you organise the meal yourselves.

  • Ceremony venue and set-up for a small group
  • Registered marriage officer, or a celebrant if you have done the legal part at home
  • Photographer, usually for two to four hours
  • A meal: a private room at an estate restaurant is the usual route for under 20 guests
  • Optional: accommodation on the estate, flowers, hair and makeup, a small cake

The gap between R15 000 and R70 000 for two people is mostly accommodation and photography. Five nights in a guest house in Paarl or Wellington with a short photo session sits at the bottom; a boutique hotel in Franschhoek with a full-day photographer and a private dinner sits at the top. For 20 guests, the cheapest route is to skip the venue fee entirely and book a private room at an estate restaurant, which turns the venue cost into a food-and-drink minimum. Our Winelands wedding cost guide has a full 20-guest budget table.

Venues that welcome small numbers

Not every estate will host a ceremony for two. The ones below publish elopement or intimate packages, or have a small ceremony space such as a historic chapel, a manor house or a restaurant terrace. Grande Roche in Paarl has a 300-year-old chapel for elopements, La Paris near Franschhoek runs separate packages for up to 50, and Boschendal uses its Rhone Homestead for smaller weddings.

The legal part, made simple

Foreign couples can marry legally in South Africa, including two foreigners with no South African partner. You do not apply for a marriage licence; the marriage officer registers the marriage. You need your passports with the entry stamp, proof that you are free to marry (a letter of no impediment or equivalent, apostilled) and documents less than six months old. A private marriage officer can act within days, which is why couples arriving two to four weeks before the date manage it comfortably. Home Affairs itself is free but the wait is two months or more.

Many couples skip all of this by signing the legal papers at home and holding a symbolic ceremony here with a celebrant. Nobody at the ceremony can tell the difference. Our guide to getting married in South Africa as a foreigner sets out the documents country by country and what happens to the certificate afterwards.

Photographer-led elopements

Several Winelands photographers sell elopement packages that bundle a few hours of coverage with help choosing a location and a marriage officer. This is the lightest-touch option: you book the photographer, they point you to the people they work with, and you spend the rest of the budget on where you stay and eat. Photography-only packages run R10 000 to R25 000 (Bridebook 2025); elopement-specific packages are often shorter and cheaper than a full wedding day.

A three-day itinerary

  1. Day one: arrive, check into your base, meet the marriage officer to hand over documents, and do a short session with your photographer at golden hour if you want portraits separate from the ceremony.
  2. Day two: the ceremony in the late afternoon, then dinner. In Franschhoek, guests can walk from the village to most restaurants; in Stellenbosch, a short shuttle from town to the estate is sensible once the wine is open.
  3. Day three: a wine-tram or guided tasting day in Franschhoek, or the drive over Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, before heading to Cape Town or a safari lodge for the honeymoon.

If you are planning from overseas, our destination wedding guide covers flights, visas, where guests stay and when to arrive. If you want a planner for the whole thing, the Winelands has several who work with couples abroad.

Questions couples ask

Can foreigners elope in South Africa?

Yes. Two foreigners can marry legally through a registered marriage officer, with passports, proof that each of you is free to marry and documents less than six months old. Private officers can act within days; Home Affairs takes two months or more. Confirm current requirements with Home Affairs before you book flights.

What does an elopement in the Winelands cost?

A 2020 guide priced two people with five nights' accommodation at R15 000 to R70 000. The main variables are where you stay and how many hours of photography you book. A ceremony-only estate fee was R7 000 at Lanzerac in 2019/20 and will be higher now.

How many days before the ceremony should we arrive?

Two to four weeks is comfortable if you are marrying legally here and have the documents ready, because a private marriage officer can register the marriage within days. If you are doing the legal part at home, you can arrive the day before.

Do we need witnesses?

Witnesses sign the register at a legal ceremony. Who may act as a witness and what identification they must bring is a question for your marriage officer, who will tell you whether they can supply witnesses if you are travelling alone.

Which estates allow a ceremony for just two people?

Grande Roche in Paarl has a chapel used for elopements, and La Paris, Allée Bleue, Boschendal, Idiom, Vergelegen and the Lord Charles Hotel all publish elopement or intimate packages. Estate restaurants are another route: a private table after a garden ceremony.

Can we marry legally at home and celebrate here?

Yes, and many overseas couples do. A celebrant leads a symbolic ceremony that looks identical to a legal one, and you avoid the apostilled documents, the certificate wait and the question of recognition at home.

Is a small wedding cheaper per head?

Usually not per head, because photographers, officers and venues have fixed costs, but the total is far lower. At 20 guests the food and drink line is about R15 000 at 2020 rates, so the venue and the photographer dominate the budget.
