How much does a Cape Winelands wedding cost? Real prices by guest count
Updated 2 November 2026
Worked budgets for 20, 60 and 120 guests, venue hire by town and type, catering per head, the house-wine rule and the fees venues add later. Every figure is dated and sourced.
A wine-estate wedding in the Cape Winelands for 50 to 60 guests usually costs between R200 000 and R360 000 all in, and a wedding for 80 to 120 guests between R320 000 and R720 000. Those bands come from a UK-facing cost guide published in 2020, so treat them as a floor rather than a ceiling. The venue is normally the single largest line, often a third or more of the total, and the average South African wedding across all regions is about R200 000 according to Bridebook's 2025 cost survey.
Below are three worked budgets, then the detail behind each line: venue hire by town and type, catering per head, the bar, suppliers and the extras that only appear on the final invoice. Where a figure comes from an older brochure it says so, because the 2019/20 rates quoted by estates have risen since.
TipSources and years: Bridebook 2025 cost articles and town FAQs; the Lanzerac wedding brochure (2019/20 rates); the Bakenhof and Ashanti published packages; Weddings Abroad Guide (2020); Pink Book (2021/23). Where we have no published figure the cell says 'on request'. Always confirm current rates with the venue.
Three worked budgets
Each table uses the low and high end of the published ranges. The totals add up the priced lines only, so add your own allowances for flowers, music, décor, hair and makeup, cake and transport. A dated 2016 estimate put photography, music, flowers and décor together at about 15 percent of a typical budget, which is a reasonable planning allowance.

Venue hire by town and type
Venue hire is where town choice shows up most. Bridebook's 2025 article gives R90 000 to R130 000 for a Winelands estate and R80 000 to R120 000 for a popular Winelands venue, with barn and farm venues at R40 000 to R60 000 and venue-only hire from about R20 000. Its Stellenbosch FAQ puts venue hire from about R40 000 and its Franschhoek FAQ gives R40 000 to R200 000 and up, which is the widest range of any town and reflects the luxury tier there. Paarl, Wellington and Tulbagh are positioned by every competitor as the value towns, and the one published Paarl figure, Ashanti at R50 000 to R64 999, supports that.

A venue fee buys different things at different estates. At the top end it includes furniture, linen, a coordinator and sometimes a set-up day; at the bottom it is a bare hall and a lawn. Our guide to the questions to ask a wine estate wedding venue lists what to check before you compare two headline prices.
Catering per head
Bridebook's 2025 catering article gives R700 to R1 200 per person for a plated meal and R350 to R700 for a buffet, excluding drinks. Estates with in-house kitchens tend to sit at the upper end: Ashanti quotes from about R800 per person, Bakenhof R580 to R800, and the Franschhoek FAQ gives R800 to R2 000 per person for that town. Per-head prices usually fall a little as numbers rise, but minimum guest numbers are common, so a 40-guest wedding may be charged for 60.
All-inclusive packages bundle venue, food and often furniture and a coordinator into one per-person rate. In Stellenbosch that runs R1 000 to R2 500 and up per person (Bridebook); Bakenhof's R2 800 to R6 000 per person includes accommodation. At 100 guests and above a package is often cheaper than hiring the venue and caterer separately, so ask for both quotes.
The bar and the house-wine rule
Almost every wine estate requires you to serve its own wines, which means you buy them at the estate's list price rather than at a bottle store. Where outside wine is allowed at all it usually only covers sparkling wine, with corkage of R30 to R80 a bottle (Bridebook 2025; Lanzerac charged R80 in 2019/20 and allowed only non-estate bubbly). Budget for about half a bottle of wine per guest plus a glass for the toast, then add beer, spirits and soft drinks either as a per-head allowance or a cash bar. Our wine estate wedding rules guide covers the detail.
Suppliers
- Photographer: R10 000 to R25 000 for photography only, R15 000 to R40 000 for photo and video (Bridebook 2025). Check whether quotes include VAT and travel to the venue.
- Planner: R15 000 to R50 000 as a flat fee, or 10 to 15 percent of the budget (Bridebook 2025). On-the-day coordination costs less; full destination planning costs more.
- Marriage officer: a Home Affairs ceremony is free but comes with a wait of two months or more; a private marriage officer charges a fee and can usually act within days (Pink Book; expat.com).
- Flowers, music, décor, hair and makeup, cake: no Winelands-specific benchmarks are published. The dated rule of thumb is that photography, music, flowers and décor together take about 15 percent of the budget (Businesstech 2016).

The lines that only appear on the final invoice
- Service fee: Lanzerac added 10 percent to the account in its 2019/20 brochure, and it is not the only estate that does.
- Set-up day, overtime and cleaning: ask whether the day before is included and what each extra hour after the curfew costs. Curfews around 23:00 or midnight are the norm.
- Generator or backup power: some venues include it, some charge for it, some leave it to you.
- Accommodation buy-outs: Lanzerac requires a marquee wedding to take all 53 rooms on the estate because of noise. Other estates with rooms have similar rules.
- Minimum spend or minimum guest numbers, deposits and payment schedules.
- Guest transport: shuttles between town and estate are a real cost once the bar is open. See our guest travel and accommodation guide.
What season and day of the week change
Fridays and Saturdays, Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve are priced higher (Bridebook 2025). Peak season runs from about November to April and the best Saturdays are taken 12 to 18 months out. Estates discount openly from May to August; one Stellenbosch estate's published winter special was R60 000 for 50 guests (Pink Book). A weekday or winter date is the largest saving available to you, and our guide to the best time of year to get married in the Winelands sets out the trade-offs month by month.
Converting to pounds, euros or dollars
Convert at the day's rate, because the rand moves a great deal from year to year. Build a margin of around ten percent into any budget set in your own currency, pay deposits early, and remember that flights and your own stay sit outside every figure on this page. Our destination wedding guide covers planning from abroad.
Using these numbers
Start from your guest count, pick the table above that matches, then look at the venue pages for Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington, Somerset West and Tulbagh to see which estates publish a starting price. If your venue budget is under R60 000, read our affordable Winelands wedding venues page. If you have fewer than 30 guests, the elopement and small weddings guide will save you most of the above.
