Guide
Stellenbosch vs Franschhoek vs Paarl: which Winelands town should you marry in?
Updated 2 November 2026
A direct comparison of the three main Winelands wedding towns on price, venue count, capacity, guest accommodation, airport time and curfews, with a decision guide by budget and guest list.
Short answer: Stellenbosch if you want the most choice and the easiest logistics, Franschhoek if you want a luxury weekend where guests walk everywhere, Paarl if you want the same vineyards for less or need room for 200 or more. The rest of this guide shows the figures behind that and where the exceptions are.

Stellenbosch: the most choice, the shortest drive
Stellenbosch has the widest spread of venue types in the Winelands: 300-year-old Cape Dutch estates such as Lanzerac and Webersburg, modern venues such as Hazendal and Landtscap, and working farms such as Hawksmoor and Damarakloof. Every listed venue has rooms on site, and the town itself has accommodation at every price for the overflow. Cape Town International Airport is 30 to 45 minutes away, the shortest drive of the three. Bridebook's 2025 Stellenbosch FAQ puts venue hire from about R40 000 and all-inclusive packages at R1 000 to R2 500 or more per person, and the best-known estates sit well above that. Pick Stellenbosch if you have 150 to 250 guests, many of them flying in, and want to see six very different venues in one day of viewings.

Franschhoek: luxury, food and a walkable village
Franschhoek is a valley closed in on three sides, with one main street of restaurants, boutique hotels and guest houses. It is the town for a wedding weekend rather than a wedding day: guests arrive on Friday, eat in the village, and ride the wine tram on Sunday. Several estates are hotels, so Mont Rochelle can hand you all 26 rooms and Vrede en Lust sleeps 52 on a two-night exclusive-use booking. It is also the best town for very small weddings, with Franschhoek Cellar's 50-seat bistro and elopement packages at Boschendal and Allée Bleue. The costs are a higher price tier (Bridebook's range runs to R200 000 and beyond for hire, with catering up to R2 000 per person) and an airport drive of about an hour. Pick Franschhoek if the budget allows, the guest list is under 150, or you are planning from overseas and want guests to manage without cars.

Paarl: the value town with the big halls
Paarl sits under its granite domes with the Berg River through the valley, and its estates are typically better value than Stellenbosch or Franschhoek for a similar setting. It is the only town of the three where a listed venue publishes a hire band: Ashanti at R50 000 to R64 999, with catering from about R800 per person. It has the most venues with chapels (Grande Roche, Diamant, Belair, Domaine Brahms and Kronenburg) and the most modern glass venues (Belair Pavilion and The Venue Paarl, both seating 200). The airport is 45 to 60 minutes away on the N1. The weaknesses are fewer on-site rooms (five of eleven venues) and a town that guests will drive around rather than walk. Pick Paarl if you have 200 to 300 guests, want a chapel, or want to put the money saved on the venue into food, drink and photography.

The alternatives: Wellington, Somerset West and Tulbagh
- Wellington, 15 minutes north of Paarl, has the largest capacities and the lowest prices for them. One estate publishes all-inclusive packages of R2 800 to R6 000 per person with a 100-guest minimum, and competitors' lists put Wellington capacities at 200 to 350.
- Somerset West is the closest Winelands town to the airport at about 25 minutes, and its Helderberg estates look over False Bay. One venue publishes hire of R40 000 to R79 000.
- Tulbagh is about 90 minutes out and the cheapest cluster by the directory tags we found, suited to a weekend-away wedding with guests staying on Church Street.
Decide by budget and guest count
- Under 30 guests: Franschhoek first, for its restaurants, cellar rooms and elopement packages; Grande Roche's chapel in Paarl is the alternative. See the elopement and small weddings guide.
- 30 to 100 guests with a mid-range budget: Paarl and the Stellenbosch farms (Hawksmoor, Damarakloof) give the most for the money. Mont Martre is the Franschhoek entry point at R70 000.
- 100 to 200 guests: all three towns work. Choose Stellenbosch for logistics, Franschhoek for food and hotels, Paarl for price.
- 200 to 300 guests: Ashanti in Paarl, La Paris in Franschhoek, Lanzerac, Hazendal or Nooitgedacht in Stellenbosch. Beyond 300, look at Wellington.
- Most guests flying in: Stellenbosch for the drive, Franschhoek for the walkable village. Book shuttles either way; see the guest logistics guide.
- Exclusive use is the priority: MolenVliet and Hawksmoor in Stellenbosch, Mont Rochelle and Vrede en Lust in Franschhoek, Kronenburg in Paarl.
What is the same everywhere
Some things do not change with the town. Peak season is November to April and Saturday dates go 12 to 18 months ahead. Nearly every wine estate requires its own wine and charges corkage of R30 to R80 a bottle on anything else; across all three towns only Hawksmoor, Damarakloof and Klein Parys state that own wine is allowed. Music stops around 23:00 or midnight. Catering benchmarks for South Africa in 2025 are R700 to R1 200 per person plated and R350 to R700 for a buffet, and the figures rise in Franschhoek. Suppliers travel freely between the three towns, which are within about 40 minutes of each other, so your photographer or florist need not be local.
TipVisit two towns in one day if you can. Stellenbosch to Franschhoek over the Helshoogte Pass takes about half an hour and passes several listed estates, and Franschhoek to Paarl is similar, so a single viewing day can cover six venues across three towns.
Where to go next
Each town has its own page with a full comparison table and venues grouped by style and guest count: the Stellenbosch wedding venues page, the Franschhoek wedding venues page and the Paarl wedding venues page. The Winelands wedding cost guide turns the figures above into worked budgets for 20, 60 and 120 guests, and the destination wedding guide covers planning from abroad.
