Guest logistics: airport transfers, shuttles and where guests should stay for a Winelands wedding
Updated 2 November 2026
Drive times from Cape Town airport to each Winelands town, why you need a shuttle, how to plan guest accommodation by town, and a copy-and-paste FAQ for your wedding website.
The short answer: every Winelands town is between 25 minutes and 90 minutes from Cape Town International Airport by car, almost every wedding needs a shuttle between guest accommodation and the venue, and the best place for guests to stay is the nearest town centre unless the venue sleeps them on site. The detail follows, with a FAQ you can paste into your wedding website.
How far each town is from the airport
Drive times from Cape Town International Airport (typical, outside peak traffic)
| Town | From the airport | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Somerset West | about 25 minutes | Closest Winelands town; Winery Road Forest is about 23 minutes, The Lord Charles about 20 |
| Stellenbosch | 30 to 40 minutes | Bottelary-side estates such as Hazendal are about 20 minutes from Cape Town |
| Paarl | 45 to 60 minutes | Under an hour on the N1 |
| Wellington | about 55 minutes | 15 minutes beyond Paarl |
| Franschhoek | about 60 minutes | Boschendal, at the valley entrance, about 40 minutes |
| Tulbagh | about 90 minutes | Kloofzicht quotes 70 minutes; Rijk's is about 120 km from Cape Town |
Those are the times couples and venues publish; add 20 to 30 minutes on a weekday afternoon, and more on the Friday before a long weekend. Guests landing on a long-haul overnight flight arrive in the morning and will be at a Stellenbosch guest house before lunch.
Getting guests from the airport
There are three realistic options. A hire car from the airport suits guests who want to explore, and most overseas guests use one for a week in the Cape anyway. A private transfer, booked in advance, is the simplest for guests who do not want to drive on the left after a night flight; private airport transfers to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are sold online as a standard product. A group shuttle, which you arrange and guests pay for or you cover, works when a dozen or more guests land within a few hours of each other.
Whichever you pick, give guests the venue's and the accommodation's full address and a phone number before they leave home, and tell them whether their accommodation has a shuttle of its own. Franschhoek Country House, for example, runs an on-demand shuttle into the village, and Lady Loch in Wellington offers airport transfers.
Why you need a wedding-day shuttle
Winelands venues are on farms, down unlit gravel roads, and the reception ends at 23:00 or midnight. Drink-driving laws apply, guests will have been drinking estate wine since four in the afternoon, and you should not plan around ride-hailing being available at a farm gate at midnight. A shuttle that runs guests from their accommodation to the venue in the afternoon and back in two or three waves at the end is the standard solution, and the venue will usually tell you where the drop-off point is.
- Book one vehicle per 20 to 25 guests staying off site, with a last departure at the venue's curfew.
- Run the return in waves: one at around 22:00 for older guests and families, one at the curfew for everyone else.
- Keep the routes short: put guests in the nearest town to the venue rather than in Cape Town.
- Publish the shuttle times on your wedding website and on a card at the reception.
- If the venue sleeps most guests, a single vehicle for the overflow is usually enough.
Where guests should stay, town by town
Stellenbosch
The easiest town for guests. Stellenbosch has hotels and guest houses at every price in and around the old town, with restaurants in walking distance, and it is the closest big town to most Stellenbosch and many Somerset West estates. Oude Werf, with 58 rooms on Church Street, and the 50-room Devon Valley Hotel a few minutes out of town are the kind of properties that can take a block.

Franschhoek
Franschhoek is a one-street village, so the logic is walking distance: book guests in the village and they can walk to dinner on the night before and to the shuttle on the day. La Fontaine has 17 suites in two heritage buildings in the village, and Franschhoek Country House is on the edge of town with its own shuttle in.

Paarl and Wellington

Lemoenkloof is a 32-room hotel on Paarl's Main Road that has hosted group events; Lady Loch in Wellington sleeps about 23 in eight rooms, from about R1 960 a room a night on its SA-Venues listing, which makes it a natural block for one wedding party.

Block bookings: how they work
Most guest houses will hold a block of rooms for a wedding weekend, often with a two-night minimum. Ask for the group rate, the deposit and the release date, which is the date unbooked rooms go back on sale and you stop being liable for them. Pass the booking code and release date to guests on your website, and remind them a month before the date. Our venues with accommodation page explains the room-block rules at estates that sleep guests on site.
A FAQ for your wedding website
Copy the list below into your wedding website and edit the details. These are the questions overseas and out-of-town guests ask most, drawn from the FAQ pages couples publish for their own weddings.
- How do we get there? Fly into Cape Town International Airport. The venue is about [X] minutes by car. We suggest a hire car or a pre-booked private transfer; a shuttle will run between the hotel and the venue on the wedding day.
- Do we need a visa? Visitors from the UK, the EU and the USA can enter South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days. Check the current rules for your passport before you book flights.
- Where should we stay? We have held rooms at [guest house] in [town]. Quote [code] when you book, before [release date]. The venue also sleeps [N] guests on site; contact us if you would like one of those rooms.
- What will the weather be like? Summer (November to April) is warm and dry, with hot afternoons and cool evenings. Winter (May to August) is wet and cool, with daytime highs around 17 to 18 degrees. Bring a layer for the evening either way.
- What is the dress code? [Your dress code]. The ceremony is outdoors on grass, so avoid thin heels.
- Is there a shuttle back after the reception? Yes. Shuttles leave the venue at [time] and at the end of the evening and return to [hotel]. Please do not drive after drinking.
- What currency do we use and should we tip? South Africa uses the Rand. Cards are accepted almost everywhere and some venues are cashless. A tip of around 10 percent is usual in restaurants.
- Are children welcome? [Your answer].
- What else can we do? Cape Town is under an hour away for a few days before or after, and the wine estates around the venue offer tastings and lunches. Ask us for our list of favourites.
- When should we arrive and leave? We suggest arriving by [day] to settle in and join the welcome drinks, and staying through [day] for a farewell breakfast.
Guests planning a holiday around the wedding
Most overseas guests turn the wedding into a trip, and it helps attendance to tell them so. A common pattern is three nights in Cape Town, the wedding weekend in the Winelands, and a safari or Garden Route week after. Somerset West guests have Gordon's Bay beaches a short drive away; Franschhoek guests have the wine tram for the day after; Stellenbosch guests can walk to dinner. Our guide to planning a destination wedding in the Cape Winelands from abroad covers timelines and visas in more depth.
